The story behind Makshy
Hat-making is more than a craft — it's a dialogue between tradition and individuality. I’m Makoto Kushida, a milliner and designer whose journey began in Tokyo, where I studied fashion design and millinery. My path then brought me to London, the vibrant heart of British millinery and hat-making. Here, I collaborated with some of England’s most renowned milliners and contributed to creating headpieces for the world of film.
In 2020, I founded Makshy — a brand inspired by the elegance of Japanese craftsmanship and the rich heritage of British millinery. From my studio on Johnsons Artist Island in London, I create hats and caps that combine traditional techniques with modern design, offering timeless pieces for individuals who value style and individuality.
Every hat tells a story, crafted using vintage and custom-designed hat blocks. These pieces are more than accessories — they are expressions of personal style, designed with elegance, simplicity, and exceptional attention to detail.
Beyond traditional hats, my collection includes handmade baseball caps that redefine casual wear with sophisticated artistry. These unique caps feature details like roll-up visors, merging functionality with bold, modern design. Each cap is crafted with the same care and precision as my classic hats, offering versatile options for everyday wear.
At the core of Makshy lies omotenashi — the Japanese art of hospitality. My designs reflect a commitment to quality, beauty, and functionality, ensuring every piece feels as special as the person who wears it.
Whether you’re seeking a classic hat or a modern cap, Makshy celebrates the art of millinery and the craftsmanship of hat-making.
